Genre Research: Thriller

Today, I started my genre research journey on different types of thriller movies. I wanted to start in a broad and popular area to find the most common and familiar movements and shots used in these types of movies, such as the movie Smile and The Conjuring. After I embarked on my journey, I was able to notice many common types of camera angles, movement, different types of props, and more. I became quite aware that some common angles and shots used were high and low angles, wide shots, and close-ups. These types of CAMS are commonly used to show how the character feels in certain areas or spaces; it also emphasizes each character's features and background to understand what is happening. Another thing that many thrillers have in common is their CLAMPS and editing styles. Parallel editing, cutaways, flashbacks, linear narrative, and match cuts are editing techniques that are used within thriller movies. A lot of these different types of editing forms are used to connect the movie as one whole set and in an understandable order to help the viewers who are watching the movie. Some similarities within the CLAMPS technique include dark and muted colors, pale/washed-out makeup, flickering fighting, chases, weapons, and abandoned locations are all main aspects of thriller movies. Lastly, some similar sounds that are commonly found within thriller/horror movies are suspenseful music, creaking doors, and heartbeats. These sound effects are used to add effect and emphasize the situation and awareness going on within the movie. I love the different types of appealing elements within thriller movies. The suspense, the jump scares, and the cliffhangers are what make thriller movies so great and amazing to watch. If I were to choose this genre, I would incorporate all of these elements into my movie to make it one of the best thriller movies out there. Now, even though I do have some positives about thriller movies, some negatives wouldn't want me to do any type of thriller movie. Some negatives are unoriginality. A lot of thrillers are based on the same topics and don't have much creativity. Although they have different themes and characters, they will always run the same with the jump scares and the actions. Many thriller movies are also very predictable, and since it is so common, I wouldn't want to have a movie where my viewers can almost predict the outcome. Overall, this genre is a great idea for people who truly love and adore thriller movies, but for today, it is not for me.
