Movie research: Carry-on

What conventions of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?
"Carry-On" follows many key conventions of the thriller genre, including a fast-paced narrative, tension-filled sequences, and an unpredictable plot. The film centers around a protagonist in a life-threatening situation, with a constant sense of urgency and danger. Additionally, there’s a focus on psychological suspense, with twists that keep the audience questioning the characters' motives. Dark, moody lighting and atmospheric settings add to the tension, keeping viewers on edge throughout.

What conventions of the genre did the movie have that you liked?
One aspect I particularly enjoyed was the psychological complexity of the characters. The film delves into the motivations and backstories of the protagonists and antagonists, which makes the suspense feel more personal and gripping. The use of cliffhangers and sudden plot twists heightened the thrill and kept me hooked from start to finish. I also appreciated the way the cinematography mirrored the emotions of the characters, using shadows and close-ups to intensify the sense of danger and paranoia.

What genre conventions did the movie have that did not appeal to you, and you are thinking of not filming it for your final task?
While the constant tension was effective, I found that at times the pacing felt overly rushed. Some of the suspenseful moments could have been built up with more lingering scenes, allowing the audience to sit with the tension rather than rushing to the next twist. Additionally, the reliance on surprise, rather than character development or emotional depth, left me feeling somewhat disconnected from the stakes. For my final task, I plan to focus more on building gradual suspense and deeper character arcs to make the thriller feel more engaging emotionally.
