Movie research: Kung Fu Panda

What conventions of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?

"Kung Fu Panda" incorporates several key conventions of the comedy genre, primarily through its use of humor based on exaggerated situations, quirky characters, and physical comedy. The movie’s central protagonist, Po, is an unlikely hero, which provides ample opportunity for both slapstick and situational comedy. The interactions between Po and the other characters, especially Master Shifu and the Furious Five, often lead to comedic moments driven by misunderstandings, awkwardness, and exaggerated reactions. The film also balances its humor with heartwarming moments that highlight personal growth and friendship, typical of family-oriented comedies.

What conventions of the genre did the movie have that you liked?
One of the things I loved about "Kung Fu Panda" is how it blends physical comedy with clever dialogue. Po’s clumsiness and unintentional antics provide a lot of laugh-out-loud moments, especially when paired with the contrast of the disciplined and serious martial artists around him. I also appreciated how the humor appealed to all ages, with jokes that work on multiple levels. The use of exaggerated visual gags, such as Po struggling to perform kung fu moves, really adds to the charm and makes the comedy feel lighthearted but impactful.

What conventions of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you and you are thinking of not filming for your final task?
While the broad, slapstick humor works in "Kung Fu Panda," I felt that at times, it relied a little too much on predictable physical gags and visual humor. Some jokes, especially those involving Po’s physical clumsiness, felt a bit repetitive and took away from the more subtle, character-driven comedy. For my final task, I want to explore more layered humor that relies on witty dialogue and character dynamics, rather than leaning too heavily on physical comedy, in order to create a more nuanced and fresh comedic experience.
