Movie research: Men in Black

What conventions of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?

"Men in Black" embodies the conventions of the action-fiction genre, blending high-stakes action sequences with science fiction elements. The film features intense chase scenes, quick-thinking heroes, and epic confrontations with alien antagonists. It also introduces futuristic technology, like the neutralizer, which is a key element in creating a world full of mystery and intrigue. The action is fast-paced, with thrilling moments of suspense, and there's an undercurrent of humor that gives the film a lighthearted but exciting vibe typical of the genre.

What conventions of the genre did the movie have that you liked?
One of the aspects I really enjoyed was the clever combination of action and humor. The dynamic between Agent J and Agent K added a layer of comedic timing to the thrilling action scenes, making it both exciting and fun to watch. I also appreciated the world-building, where Earth is secretly a hub for alien life, which opens the door for a wide range of imaginative and unexpected situations. The visual effects, especially in showcasing the alien technology and creatures, also contributed to making the action sequences more engaging and unique.

What conventions of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you and you are thinking of not filming for your final task?
While "Men in Black" was enjoyable, I felt that some of the action sequences relied too heavily on exaggerated spectacle, such as over-the-top special effects and dramatic alien encounters. These moments sometimes overshadowed character development and emotional depth, which made it harder to connect with the story on a personal level. For my final task, I plan to focus more on grounded action, emphasizing character-driven conflicts and realistic stakes, rather than leaning too much on flashy effects or cartoonish action sequences.
